Qigong and Forest Bathing: Moving with Nature’s Rhythm The Synergy of Qigong and Forest Bathing
I still remember the first time I practised Qigong in the forest. The way the light filtered through the trees, the sound of birdsong harmonising with my breath, the sensation of my body gently moving with the rhythm of nature, it felt like coming home.
For years, I’ve guided Forest Bathing experiences, helping people slow down, breathe deeply, and connect with the wild around them. But something was missing.
Then it clicked.
Qigong.
Forest Bathing is a practice of deep connection, aligning with the energy of the seasons, the elements, and the wisdom of nature itself. When I began weaving Qigong into some of my sessions, I found it added another layer of flow and presence, deepening the experience in a unique way. Best of all, you don’t need any prior experience in Qigong to enjoy its benefits!
Why Qigong and Forest Bathing Work So Well Together
Both Qigong and Forest Bathing invite us to pause, breathe, and become fully present. But they do so in beautifully complementary ways:
🌿 Qigong helps us land in our bodies → Gentle movements open up energy flow, awaken the senses, and ground us in the present moment.
🌲 Forest Bathing deepens our connection to the world around us → Inviting us to listen, observe, and absorb the forest’s natural healing energy.
Each enhances the other. When we move before we sit in stillness, we arrive fully present, body, mind, and spirit aligned with the rhythm of the natural world.
Beyond that, both practices have been used for centuries to promote physical and mental well-being. Scientific research has shown that spending time in nature reduces stress, lowers blood pressure, and boosts the immune system. Meanwhile, Qigong’s gentle movements have been proven to enhance energy levels, improve circulation, and balance emotions.
Together, they create an immersing experience that nourishes the body, mind, and soul.
What to Expect in a Qigong & Forest Bathing Session
No two sessions are the same! Why? Because nature is never the same twice! The forest is constantly shifting with the seasons, the weather, and even the time of day. But here’s a glimpse of what a morning in the wild might look like:
🌿 Qigong: Awakening the Body & Energy Flow
• Gentle, flowing movements, nothing strenuous, just soft, natural motion and breath.
• Standing in open space beneath the trees, feeling rooted yet fluid, energised yet calm.
• Tuning into the energy of the season, whether it’s the rising yang of spring or the deep stillness of winter.
• Movements that mirror nature, perhaps flowing like water, expanding like a tree, or grounding like a mountain.
🌲 Forest Bathing: Deepening Presence & Connection
• Slowing down, softening, and using our senses to connect, what do we see, hear, feel?
• Guided invitations to explore the landscape in a way that feels intuitive and effortless.
• Tuning into the details, the texture of bark, the scent of the air, the sensation of bare feet on moss.
• Time for quiet reflection, letting the forest be the teacher.
There’s no right or wrong way to experience it! Remember the focus isn’t on “doing it right” - it’s on being present.
The Healing Benefits of Qigong & Forest Bathing
The combination of Qigong and Forest Bathing goes beyond relaxation; it’s a powerful tool for healing. The benefits are both immediate and long-term:
Reduces stress and anxiety → Both practices calm the nervous system and bring the body into a state of deep relaxation.
Boosts immune function → Time in nature has been shown to increase natural killer (NK) cells, which help the body fight off illness.
Improves energy levels → Qigong balances energy (Qi) in the body, helping to combat fatigue.
Enhances mental clearness and focus → Slowing down and breathing deeply brings clearness of thought and a sense of inner stillness.
Supports emotional balance → Moving with intention and immersing in nature helps release stuck emotions and cultivate inner peace.
Strengthens the connection to the natural world → Feeling at home in nature brings a sense of belonging and deepens ecological awareness.
Tuning into the Seasons: Nature as Our Guide
One of the most beautiful aspects of Qigong and Forest Bathing is that they shift with the seasons. Each season brings different energy, and we can align our practice accordingly:
🍃 Spring invites expansion, awakening, and growth. It’s a time to stretch, open up, and embrace renewal.
☀️ Summer encourages us to express, play, and move with joy. The energy is bright, full, and outward-facing.
🍂 Autumn teaches us to let go, breathe deeply, and prepare for change. Just like the trees release their leaves, we learn to release what no longer serves us.
❄️ Winter calls for stillness, reflection, and conservation of energy. It’s a time to go inward, practice gentle movements, and embrace deep rest.
Rather than forcing ourselves into rigid routines, we can flow with the seasons and allow nature’s rhythm to guide us.
How to Get Started: No Experience Needed
The beauty of this practice is its simplicity. You don’t need any fancy gear, previous experience, or a specific fitness level to enjoy the benefits. All you need is:
Comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing
An open mind and a sense of curiosity
A willingness to slow down and tune in
The forest will meet you exactly where you are, whether you’re feeling tired and in need of restoration or energised and ready to flow.
